5th Arab Water Week conference opens in Jordan

Jordanian Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abul Saud on Sunday (March 3rd) opened the 5th Arab Water Week (AWW) conference at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre at the Dead Sea, the Jordan Times reported.

The AWW was organised by the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association, in partnership with Ministry of Water and Irrigation and League of Arab States’ Arab Ministerial Water Council.

It was announced at the conference that Jordan has been chosen as the headquarters of the Global Observatory for Water and Peace, an international facility aimed at promoting efforts in water for holistic peace.

A report prepared by the Global High-Level Panel on Water and Peace, containing recommendations for the prevention of water-related conflicts and promoting water as a tool for peace, also was launched at the conference.

In related news, Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri met Sunday in Amman with Jordan’s King Abdullah, where discussions touched on Jordan’s willingness to exchange water for electricity with Lebanon, the National News Agency reported.

Berri highlighted Lebanon’s longtime electricity crisis, to which Abdullah expressed readiness to provide Lebanon with electricity in exchange for water.
