Egypt hosts regional conference to boost counter-terror co-operation

Egypt on Thursday (February 21st) concluded a two-day Middle East and North Africa (MENA) conference on enhancing international co-operation to address terror financing and money laundering, regional media reported.

Representatives from 41 countries and international organisations from the MENA region and Asia took part in the conference, including prosecutor generals, ministers, ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions.

Conference participants discussed issues related to fighting terrorism and other crimes, along with means of boosting international co-operation in this regard.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi stressed the danger posed by terrorists returning from conflict zones to their countries of origin, and set out Egypt's vision in combating terrorism.

This involves tackling the issue from the security, political, economic, social, intellectual and religious aspects, he said, as well as combating funding and political and media support for terrorist groups.

Jordanian Attorney General Mohamed Saeed called for unifying regional and international efforts to combat money laundering and terrorism.

UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi highlighted the dangers faced by the region and world, which he said have made confronting terror financing and money laundering an urgent necessity for peoples and countries.

He stressed the UAE’s commitment to relevant agreements and international treaties, and noted its efforts to modify current legislation and enact new laws, as well as working to create a comprehensive Arab strategy.
