Jordan’s parliamentary public service and transportation committee on Tuesday (November 6th) commended the government’s responsiveness to its demands with regard to the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Jaber-Nassib border crossing with Syria, the Jordan Times reported.
The committee’s demands included the disbursement of 500,000 Jordanian dinars ($705,000) before the end of 2018, with the aim of floating a tender for the maintenance and rehabilitation of facilities at the border crossing centre.
The committee, chaired by MP Khaled Abu Hassan, met with Interior Minister Samir Mubaidin, Finance Minister Ezzeddine Kanakrieh, Housing Minister Falah Omoush and Jordan Customs Department director general Abdulmajid Alrahamneh, the Jordanian news agency, Petra, reported.
It also recommended that the opening hours of the crossing be increased to mitigate the pressure from rising numbers of people entering and exiting the kingdom, while continuing to prioritise security.
Mubaidin noted, however, that the hours had been set by the Syrian side.
Since the crossing reopened on October 15th, there have been about 75,000 departures and arrivals through it, Al-Rai daily newspaper reported Tuesday.
