Former intelligence officer gunned down in Jordan

The former head of Jordan's General Intelligence Department’s anti-terrorism unit was gunned down Tuesday (October 23rd) in the city of Madaba, near Amman, Jordan's news agency, Petra, reported.

The victim, identified as Maj. Gen. Habes Hanayneh, was shot while walking along a street in Madaba earlier Tuesday by a man said to espouse extremist ideology, a local security source said.

Hanayneh was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The killer was shortly arrested after the shooting by a special joint investigation team from the Public Security Department (PSD) and General Intelligence Department (GID), Petra said.

"The murderer confessed to his crime, saying he had planned it a while ago, believing that Hanayneh was behind his arrest in Russia in 2005, and caused him trouble at his work," a PSD spokesman said.

He will be referred to the competent judicial authorities for further investigation, the spokesman said.
