Egypt's aviation ministry conducts final inspections at Sphinx airport

The Egyptian Ministry of Aviation has conducted a final inspection of West Cairo's Sphinx International Airport (SPX) in preparation for its official launch, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported Wednesday (October 10th).

The construction of the airport started in 2016, and the airport was inspected by the International Civil Aviation Organisation in February.

The airport aims to alleviate pressure on Cairo International Airport and serve 6th of October, Sheikh Zayed and the governorates of Fayoum and Beni Sweif.

The new airport is part of a plan to construct two other airports; Katameya International Airport to the north of Cairo to serve visitors heading to New Cairo, and the new administrative capital, as well as El-Meliz Airport in Central Sinai.

Last October, then-minister of aviation Sherif Fathy said the airport had “strategic goals”, with a plan for expanding to cargo services in the future in addition to supporting tourism.
