Egypt police seize large collection of artefacts in Beni Suef

Egyptian forces raided the home of two antiquities traffickers in Beni Suef governorate, where a large collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts was found, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported Tuesday (October 9th).

The suspects, who are brothers, are on the run, the Interior Ministry said.

Among the findings were several sarcophagi, small gold statues, busts as well as several ushabti statues (funerary figurines) from ancient Egypt, as well as 5,450 coins from the Greco-Roman era.

The Beni Suef prosecution is currently investigating the case, security forces are searching for the two suspects.

In a separate incident, the Egyptian Embassy in Kuwait on Monday received an ancient coffin lid that had been smuggled from Egypt to Kuwait in March, and preparations are under way to return it to Cairo.

Officials at the Egyptian Embassy said the artifact will be delivered to the Antiquities Restoration Department at the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities.

The artefact was discovered hidden in a sofa that was shipped by a certified shipping company. Officers at the Kuwait Airways cargo terminal discovered it as they were scanning the shipment.
