Saudi Arabia launches 2018 archaeological excavation season

The Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH) has announced the launch of the 2018 season of archaeological excavations, with the participation of 44 joint Saudi-global expeditions across the kingdom, the Saudi Press Agency reported Wednesday (October 10th).

The SCTH has recently expanded its survey and exploration work to take a more comprehensive and systematic approach to include more sites, as the kingdom is rich in thousands of archaeological sites of great historical and cultural value.

The work of the survey and archaeological excavations is being carried out using modern scientific methods, the SPA said.

Expeditions from universities and research centres in the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, Finland, Japan, Australia and China are under way, alongside Saudi archaeological expeditions led by the universities of King Saud, Hail, Jazan and others.

The projects are exploring different locations that date from prehistoric times to the Islamic era, and are expected to continue for several seasons.

Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, president of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, will conduct field visits to these expeditions.
