Jordan, Lebanon discuss bilateral co-operation

Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi and his Lebanese counterpart Gebran Bassil on Tuesday (October 9th) discussed ways to enhance bilateral co-operation, the Jordan Times reported.

During their meeting at the Foreign Ministry, the two ministers stressed the two countries’ intention to take effective steps that would contribute to the expansion of economic and tourism co-operation and increase trade exchange.

Safadi said he and Bassil discussed holding a meeting of the Jordan-Lebanon Joint High Committee to agree on the mechanisms of expanding co-operation and improving relations to the advanced levels envisioned.

Bassil said he reviewed with Safadi means of promoting Jordanian-Lebanese relations, particularly in economic and commercial fields, and voiced hope that the Jaber/Nassib crossing between Jordan and Syria would be opened soon.

Joint committees are examining technicalities related to the reopening of border crossings with Syria, Safadi said, noting that these will be reopened when such work is completed.

Regarding the Syrian crisis, Bassil said Jordan and Lebanon see eye-to-eye on the need to arrive at a political solution in Syria, affirming the need for such a solution to be acceptable to the Syrians.

The two countries are keen to achieve peace and stability on their borders with Syria, he said, adding that the repatriation of Syrian refugees can be achieved with the return of security and stability.
