Syrian refugees make up one third of Lebanon's prison population

Syrian refugees account for 27% of Lebanon's prison population as of 2016, according to Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council Jean Fahed, Annahar reported Wednesday (August 8th).

In a meeting with President Michel Aoun, Fahed said that the percentage of Syrian refugee prisoners increased from 18% in 2011, to 27% in 2016, further "burdening the Lebanese judicial system while increasing pressure on Lebanese courts".

Meanwhile, the percentage of those awaiting trial rose from 33.67% in 2012 to 51.68% in 2017, he said.

"The crimes committed by these refugees are dangerous and complex," he said, adding that "Syrian refugees held on terrorism charges accounts to 46.3% as of 2017".
