Egypt to establish Sahel-Saharan counter-terrorism headquarters in Cairo

Egypt called for precautionary measures to prevent terrorism from reaching Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) members during the 7th meeting of the body’s ministers of defence, held in Nigeria from June 20th to 22nd, Ahram Online reported Thursday (June 21st).

Maj. Gen. Mohamed al-Keshki, assistant minister of defence for external relations, affirmed that Egypt is establishing a Sahel-Saharan counter-terrorism headquarters in Cairo.

Egypt also will host the annual Sahel-Saharan counter-terrorism training effort, he said, in light of its desire to enhance military co-operation between Sahel-Saharan states.

Cairo suggested activating mechanisms of co-operation and co-ordination between national institutions in the 29 CEN-SAD member states and at a regional level, within the framework of comprehensive military and security co-operation against the threat of terrorism.

Egypt also warned of the consequences of terrorism infiltrating Sahel-Saharan states in light of rapid developments in the capabilities of terrorist organisations in training and arming, technological advancements and funding sources.
