Alexandria to host international museums conference

The Egyptian city of Alexandria was on Thursday (June 7th) selected to host the General Conference of the International Council of Museums in 2022, following fierce competition from Oslo and Prague, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.

The Mediterranean city received 67 votes, while Prague came in second with 52 and Oslo third with 11.

Alexandria will be the first city in Africa and the Arab region to host the International Council of Museums' General Conference.

The conference is the largest heritage event in the world and is attended by 4,000 experts and numerous tourism companies.

Egypt was one of the founding countries of the International Council of Museums in UNESCO in 1946, and has expanded its role in the council in recent years.

Separately, Egypt was elected last week as the first Arab country to chair the UNESCO committee for countering illicit trafficking of antiquities, and will chair the committee through May 2019.
