Government of Egypt premier Sherif Ismail resigns

The cabinet of Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail on Tuesday (June 5th) submitted its resignation to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.

"Prime Minister Sherif Ismail submitted the resignation of the government to the president of the republic," presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said in a statement.

In a separate statement, Rady said al-Sisi met with Ismail on Tuesday and asked his cabinet to "continue to perform its duties and responsibilities until a new government is formed".

The move by the cabinet is routine, as a new government is expected to be formed following al-Sisi’s swearing in for a second term three days ago.

Ismail took office in September 2015. The last reshuffle of his cabinet took place in January and included the addition of four new ministers.
