Egypt to boost rail services for Eid al-Fitr

Egypt Railway Authority head Sayed Salem on Monday (June 4th) announced the authority would make available more trains and seats on various routes in preparation for the Eid al-Fitr holiday, Egypt’s Ahram Online reported.

According to Salem, the authority has started to operate 10 additional trains and 38 carriages, providing 169,000 extra seats in order to cope with the increase in the number of passengers traveling for Eid with their families.

Egypt's railways traditionally face congestion in the run-up to and during the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Families travel across Egypt to enjoy the three-day official holiday, which is expected to fall this year on June 15th.

The additional trains will have vacant seats that passengers can book on the same day, Salem said, noting that the authority will monitor railway ticket sales to combat black market sales, which can cause ticket shortages.

The authority also has limited the number of tickets sold to buyers at railway stations to four per person.

Egypt boosts railway services before Eid al-Fitr. However, should this be for Eid al-Fitr alone or all year long?! When people in Upper Egypt want to go to capital Cairo for treatment or other services which are based in Cairo, they suffer a lot in getting round trip train tickets to Cairo. Meanwhile, brokers get active around ticket windows and at some hotels to sell tickets at higher prices.
