Egyptian forces kill 8 extremists in Sinai

Egypt's army on Tuesday (May 29th) said eight extremists and two soldiers had been killed amid ongoing security operations in the Sinai peninsula, AFP reported.

Egyptian forces launched Operation Sinai 2018 in February in the peninsula and parts of the mainland, where they have been battling the “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria” (ISIS).

A military statement said eight militants were killed "in recent days" in clashes with security personnel, who were combing the area for suspected extremist hideouts.

Two soldiers were killed and one officer and three other soldiers were wounded, it said.

More than 200 extremists and at least 35 soldiers have been killed since the military launched the operation, according to official figures.
