Jordan foils major ISIS terror plot

Jordan’s General Intelligence Department on Monday (January 8th) said it had thwarted a massive terrorist plot by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS), the Jordanian news agency, Petra, reported.

The plotters had planned to simultaneously target military and security facilities, commercial centres, media outlets and moderate religious scholars, the department said in a statement.

A total of 17 persons were arrested for involvement in the plot, which was uncovered based on intelligence information, and arms found in their possession were seized, the statement said.

The cell had robbed a number of banks in Rusaifa and Zarqa, also stealing from vehicles to raise funds, and planned to manufacture explosives using raw materials available in the market.

Cell members were referred to the prosecutor general of the State Security Court, and were charged with plotting to carry out terrorist acts, promoting the ideology of a terrorist group, interfering to execute terrorist acts, and selling weapons to be used in terrorist acts.
