Libya arrests ISIS element involved in beheading Egyptians in 2015

Libyan authorities have arrested a man in connection with the 2015 murder of 20 Egyptian Copts in Libya by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS), Egypt’s Ahram Online reported Thursday (September 28th).

The murders took place behind a hotel in the coastal city of Sirte, chief of investigations at the Libyan public prosecution, Al-Sadiq al-Sour, said during a Thursday press conference in Tripoli.

The arrested militant, who "watched and oversaw the incident", gave authorities details about the killings, al-Sour said, describing him as "one of the most dangerous" fighters in the group.

The militant also informed authorities of the whereabouts of the victims’ bodies.

"We are working to locate the bodies, which we hope we can do despite the long time" that has passed since the incident took place, al-Sour said.

Other militants who carried out the beheadings have been identified "by name", he said.

Egypt bombed ISIS targets in Libya on February 16th, 2015, one day after the group released a video of the executions.
