Jordan issues body-worn cameras to police

Jordan's Public Security Department (PSD) on Wednesday (July 12th) said that it has begun issuing body-worn cameras to police officers, the Jordan Times reported.

The measure aims to monitor police officers’ interactions with the public, a PSD statement said.

The cameras will enable the department to monitor police conduct when dealing with the public, enforce transparency and objectiveness, and limit any potential conflict between police and the public.

The body cams also aim to monitor police officers' commitment to rules and directives, as well as to provide a record of occurrences while on duty, the statement said.

The cameras can record high quality sound and video, which can be used as evidence.

In the first stage of the roll out, the cameras have been issued to police officers in the field, traffic police officers, officers on patrol, as well as any police likely to come into direct contact with the public.

The measure comes in response to King Abdullah's directives to utilise technology in police work, to ensure the safety of both the public and police officers.
