ISIL kills 15 Iraqi border guards near Jordan

The "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) carried out an attack on an Iraqi border guard position near Jordan on Friday (February 24th), killing at least 15 guards, AFP reported.

"ISIL launched an attack with a suicide car bomb and gunmen on the 2nd border guard regiment near Trebil," an officer in the border guard said. "The attack came from several directions and killed 15 border guards, including two officers."

Iraq's Anbar province borders Jordan. Border guards deployed near Jordan and Syria have been repeatedly attacked by the group, but Friday's attack was among the deadliest.

An official in the Iraqi town of Rutba confirmed the attack and the death toll.

Meanwhile, residents of Ramtha, a Jordanian town near the border with Syria, on Thursday expressed concern over ongoing clashes in nearby Daraa, the Jordan Times reported.

The town is only a few kilometres from Daraa, which has seen intensified fighting between Syrian regime and opposition forces over the past few days.

Residents said they were worried shells might fall on the town, and as a precautionary measure, the Ramtha Education Directorate evacuated schools on Thursday.
