Egypt executes convicted Sinai police attacker

Egyptian prison authorities on Thursday (December 15th) executed a militant convicted of murder in connection with an August 2013 attack in Sinai that killed 25 security personnel and another attack, Egypt's Ahram Online reported.

Adel Habara was handed final death sentences in two cases for his involvement in terrorist attacks against Egyptian security personnel.

On Monday, Egypt's Court of Cassation upheld the second death sentence against Habara for killing a police detective in Sharqiya governorate in 2012. On Wednesday, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ratified Habara's death warrant.

A copy of the court’s reasoning behind the verdict published by Al-Ahram said authorised recordings of Habara’s phone calls revealed he formed a cell that later pledged allegiance to the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL).
