Cairo court sentences 8 for joining ISIL, attacks

The Cairo Criminal Court on Tuesday (November 29th) sentenced eight defendants to life in prison on charges of joining an unlawful group and communicating with a terrorist organisation, Egypt's Ahram Online reported.

The charges also included attacks on public and private property.

Three of the defendants in the case, publicly known as "ISIL in Cairo", were tried and convicted in absentia.

A life sentence amounts to 25 years in jail, according to Egypt’s penal code.

Egypt's army and police have been battling the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in Sinai since 2013.
