Rights group accuses Houthis of abusive detention

Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Thursday (November 17th) accused Yemen's Houthis (Ansarallah) of arbitrarily detaining, torturing and forcibly disappearing opponents since the group overran Sanaa in September 2014, AFP reported.

The group said it had documented two deaths in custody and 11 cases of alleged torture, including one of a child.

The rights group said these cases were among hundreds of reported cases of arbitrary detention by the Iran-backed Houthis and their allies.

"The authorities (in Sanaa) should free those wrongfully held immediately, end detention without access to lawyers or family members, and prosecute officials responsible for mistreatment," HRW said.
