Lebanon tensions will not affect army: commander

Lebanese Army Commander Gen. Jean Kahwaji on Wednesday (September 7th) stressed that the latest domestic political tensions "will not affect the army's role", Lebanon's Naharnet reported.

“The ongoing domestic tensions will not at all affect the army's role in safeguarding the country's unity and institutions and preserving security, which is the cornerstone of the national economy,” Kahwaji said during an inspection visit to the Riyaq Air Base and the posts of the 2nd Intervention Regiment in central Bekaa.

“The army's priority amid the successive crises in the Arab world and the international and regional conflicts is to protect Lebanon and immunise it against all threats, especially against the threat of terrorism and its criminal plots,” the army chief added.

The army “is in full control of the situation across Lebanon, whether through preventative security or direct operations aimed at striking the terrorist groups on the border and inside the country", he said.
