Egypt police captain killed after Sinai shootout

An Egyptian police captain was killed Monday (August 15th) when a landmine detonated during a shootout with "terrorist elements" in the North Sinai provincial capital of al-Arish, Egypt's Ahram Online reported.

Capt. Mohamed Safwat Mohamed Roshdy died from injuries sustained following the landmine explosion while security forces were chasing gunmen who had been planting a 50-kilogramme explosive device near an al-Arish police station, the interior ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, the police were able to defuse the bomb that was set to target the police station, and were able to injure one of the gunmen.

Security forces were intensifying efforts to catch the culprits, the statement said.

"Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) affiliate Wilayat Sinai has claimed responsibility for attacks against security personnel and installations in the area.
