Al-Qaeda elements on Monday (March 11th) fired a mortar on a meeting of the Security Belt Forces in Abyan province's al-Mahfad district, al-Mahfad mayor Ahmed al-Rabei told Al-Mashareq.

The meeting was attended by the commanders of the UAE-backed Security Belt Forces camp in al-Mahfad and commanders of security and military checkpoints in the district, he said.

No casualties have been reported in the attack.

"The rapid intervention forces combed the southern side of the camp where the mortar was fired to pursue the terrorists," al-Rabei said.

Security Belt Forces have raised the level of readiness "as a precaution against potential attacks by terrorist elements against the camp and military checkpoints", he said.

Al-Rabei warned against informants operating for the account of al-Qaeda who might have delivered information regarding the meeting, urging local residents to report suspicious movements to security forces.

Security Belt Forces have been cracking down on al-Qaeda in al-Mahfad and other districts of Abyan and have already cleared most of the province of the group's elements.
